The Amawalk Nursery
With Local Historian Monica Doherty

The Amawalk Nursery, set on 249 acres in the hills of Westchester, was established by Major Orlando Jay Smith, a tree hobbyist, in 1904. After his death in 1908, the nursery was managed by his daughters, Evelyn W. and M. F. Smith. Evelyn became President of the Amawalk Nurseries in 1919 when she purchased her sister’s half of their father’s estate – and under her management, trees from Amawalk Nursery were shipped all over the world – to as far away as Australia. In its day, the nursery was known as “the largest big tree nursery in the world.” Trees from Amawalk have been planted throughout New York State, and some can still be found at notable and historic sites.

In a program filled with vintage photographs, diagrams, published advertisements and images, Monica Doherty will trace the creation and growth of Yorktown’s Amawalk Nursery – noting the nursery’s great impact on much of the surrounding area, as well as to the fields of horticulture and arboriculture throughout the world. Using lovingly and painstakingly captured then and now photos, Ms. Doherty will also demonstrate what became of the nursery, and what remains can be seen today.

Shot Down Over Italy
A True Story of Courage and Survival
in Nazi-Occupied Italy During World War II
with Historian and Author John W. Lanza

On May 26, 1944, a B-25 Mitchell bomber with a seven-man crew was shot down over Nazi-occupied Italy. At the time, Italy was caught in a complex, controversial, drawn-out, and bloody war of attrition. When disaster struck, the fate of each crew member rested, first, on the ability of the pilot to control the ship so that they could bail out; and, second, on who reached them first when they hit the ground – Mussolini’s Fascists, Hitler’s Nazis, or the partisans of the Italian Resistance. This crew trained long and hard to prepare for the air war, but nothing prepared them for the possibility of having to evade the enemy, survive a prisoner of war camp, or worse still, sacrifice their lives. On May 26th, those possibilities became realities of war.

Hanging Captain Gordon
with Educator, Historian and AUthor
Ron Soodalter

On a frosty day in late February 1862, hundreds gathered in New York City’s “Tombs” prison to watch the execution of Nathaniel Gordon. A sea captain from an old and respected Portland, Maine family, Gordon was about to become the only man in the history of the United States to be hanged for slave trading. What events led up to this pivotal moment? In Hanging Captain Gordon, Ron Soodalter explores the many compelling issues that came together to seal one man’s fate.

When Gordon had sailed two years before to bring Africans back in chains from the Congo River, he had no reason to fear a hanging. Although this horrible crime had been a capital offense for over 40 years, the government – through corruption and disinterest – never bothered to enforce it. President Buchanan himself had stated publically that he would never hang a slaver! But Gordon didn’t realize that a major change was coming. With the nation embroiled in a civil war, and a new president at the helm, social reform was the order of the day. Captain Gordon got caught up in the most vital turning point in American history.

The Sinking of the USS Indianapolis
A Story of Tragedy, Heroism, Deception and Redemption
with Michael S. Bennett and John FIorella

It was late July, 1945. But to the few remaining survivors, despite the passage of time, the memories linger, thick enough, almost, to reach out and touch. “That night started out just fine,” Don Blum recalled. He was on watch, directing three quad 40mm guns on the ship’s starboard side. In the pitch black of night, with radar to warn of approaching enemy aircraft, all was calm. The ship had just left Guam, heading for the Leyte Gulf in the Philippines where it was to rendezvous with the battleship USS Idaho, preparing for the expected American invasion of the Japanese mainland. Not known to the crew, they had just delivered a very special cargo. It was twenty-one year old Ensign Blum’s first time at sea. In fact, he had only been aboard the ship for one day before departing San Francisco for Pearl Harbor. Two weeks and some 6000 nautical miles later, the ship steamed ahead through the dark of night at 17 knots, in moderate seas and with poor visibility. Many of the ship’s 1196 crewmembers were asleep below deck, leaving the large ship eerily quiet. “I had been eating a sandwich,” said Blum, when shortly after midnight a Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into the Indianapolis. In 12 minutes the American ship was gone, along with three hundred of her crew. Ensign Donald Blum and nearly nine hundred of his shipmates were floating in the Pacific Ocean. Waiting. Hoping. Most would never live to see rescue. Those who did would never forget their five days in hell: thirst, hunger, exposure… and the sharks. Those who survived would have to live with those memories forever.

Zhenya Amditis

Join a professional psychic, tarot reader, and occult historian for a workshop accessing “higher wisdom” through card divination.  The course will discuss the tarot from earliest appearance in 15th century Italy, through the 18th century occult revival, to its resurrection in the Victorian spiritualist movement, to the 21st century New Age movement, while also allowing interested students to master the technique of tarot divination for themselves. This course draws from intellectual history, art history, 19th century occult culture, New Age writings, and my 30 years of experience as a tarot reader.  Each course meeting will include both historical background on the tarot along with “hands on” practice with tarot divination.
